JP - Arquitetura & Restauro Rebrand. Hard Work!

After arriving in Brazil for Christmas with the family after 1 whole year away from them, I got approched by a very special potential client - MY DAD! " I would like a new logo for my company and a website, and it has to be done by the time you leave back to the UK! " (o_O)

1 month and 1 week to rebrand his company, design and develop his website! the website has been designed but it's not online yet... a few changes and in about a week the it should be up and running smoothly (www.jorgepassos.com.br).

Talking a little bit about the work, the logo is basically a rough sketch of an Ionic Greek Column. We have been discussing the design for a while now but it never actually came to life until now. We kept the same colour as the old logo and also used the image in the logo as a water mark on the website and the rest of the company's literature.

The website is very simple but straight forward and easy to navigate.

The New 27" iMac... What a beauty!

Apple have just released the mighty 27" iMac with both i5 and i7 quad processor technology!

iMac

According to Apple, this is the Fastest mac EVER!!!

The 27-inch iMac's screen is the thing to focus on in this revision. It is practically as bright (and more contrasty) than any of the previous iMacs—even Cinema Displays—and it looks astounding. It's LED-driven so it comes to full luminescence immediately and takes up less power. It also has better side-to-side viewing angle as an IPS tech monitor; like the iMac 24 before it, it goes 178 degrees without much change in color accuracy or brightness. And here's the kicker: Although it has 19% more area of LCD than the old 24-incher, it has 60% more pixels. That makes it more pixel dense than any of the Cinema Displays at 109ppi. And with a 2560x1440 resolution it has 90% of the dot count of a 30-inch cinema display. All these stats are great. They sound great, and they make for a powerful picture. But the actual view of the screen leaves me with a positive—but slightly imperfect—impression.

The iMac replaces its old mouse with the new Magic Mouse, with a multitouch surface and 360 degree scrolling and swiping, almost like the gestures you find on a Macbook trackpad.

The keyboard is also changed, going from the old wired keyboard, which was stamped out of the screen cutout of the chassis, with a wireless Bluetooth model. Apple states that the keyboard's narrow profile makes it a better fit next to the mouse.

There are other all-in-ones from PC makers, but at the moment, none as large or high-res as the iMac 27. The ones from Sony (like the L) and HP have various extras like IR touchscreens, glowing monitor bodies, TV tuners and Blu-ray drives. Some are pretty decent, like the Touchsmart we just reviewed. If these things matter to you and you are not married to the Mac platform, you might consider them. But that touchscreen functionality is still half-baked, so don't do it for the groping potential.

The Future of HTML5 by Bruce Lawson

At FOWA London 2009 Bruce Lawson gave an introduction to HTML 5 and how it might be used in the future.

The HTML 5 spec was originally called “Web Applications 1.0″. Most of the attention has been on the new markup elements, but in his talk he takes a further look at the applications side of the spec, covering:

1. Dynamic images and graphs with canvas
2. Eliminating much forms validation with webforms 2.0
3. Local storage automagically saving your data
4. Geolocation
5. Building toolbars and menus.

Editor’s Note: We’ll be covering “How HTML 5 is Going to Completely Change your Web App” at The Future of Web Apps in Miami.

Whatever happened to the Art in Design? by Keir Whitaker

Mike Kus, designer at Carsonified, gave a quick fire 15 minute talk entitled “Whatever happened to the Art in Design?”. In it he describes ways in which thinking of web design in a more artistic way will maximize the impact of your site designs.

Here’s a quick summary of his talk:

1. The 50% thing: Remember the visible pixels on the screen are only 50% of your canvas
Preparation: By knowing your subject matter well you will arm yourself with the knowledge to create well thought out and meaningful ideas
2. Get Inspired: Get yourself into a headspace where you’re totally consumed by ideas for your project
Idea, Concept, Story: It’s the idea, concept or story within your design that can take a website from a good design to a work of art.
3. Ditch your Mac: Get back to basics with paper and a pen
4. Execution: Attention to detail is the difference between a good design and a great design
